Let there be Light As we head into the shortest days of the year, it is a good time to think about how you are lighting you home. Lights are now burning brightly morning and night and what they could really be doing is burning a hole in your wallet and the environment. Energy efficient lighting is nothing new, but the technology has certainly come a very long way since the first fluorescent pigtail-like light bulbs of a couple of decades back. Gone are the days when you switched on an ‘energy efficient’ light and had to wait for what seemed like the length of the dawn sunrise until you had about as much illumination as a wintery dusk. In today’s energy savvy world, energy efficient lighting is affordable and effective with plenty of options and incredibly efficient when it comes to annual running costs. There are various terms used to describe what’s available in lighting today. Incandescent light bulbs are the traditional bulbs with a filament that burns bright and hot. There are also Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL’s), Halogen

lamps and Light Emitting Diodes (LED’s), which come in many forms and colours. If you are adding, changing or putting new lighting into your home, steer clear of anything that requires an incandescent bulb. The low upfront cost might seem attractive, but you’ll be replacing the bulbs on average 40 times more often than the most efficient lamps and in an average home the annual energy costs will be up to 400% higher.
The environmental impact is a real positive too with average emissions from LED’s being up to 10 times lower than incandescent lamps. When lighting your home, take the time to make smart choices that will give you the look and style you want, whilst producing effective light where it’s needed and help to reduce your energy costs. * Usage information sourced from http://www.energywise. govt.nz/
If you settle on CFL’s, you’re part of the way there. The lamps will last on average nearly seven times longer and by replacing just one incandescent lamp with a CFL, you could save $20.00 in the first year. Multiply that by the total number of light fittings in your home and the annual savings are in the hundreds of dollars. But by far the front runner in lighting today is the LED. You’ll almost forget how to change a light bulb due to the fact that LED’s will last a minimum of 10 years and often as long as 25!* They are cooler to the touch, have almost zero risk of fire and are extremely efficient to run.

We’ve certainly come a long way in terms of home-entertainment technology in recent years with the rapid development (and growing popularity) of home-theatre systems incorporating state-of-the-art surround sound, ultra high-definition LED/LCD and plasma screens (with 3D option) as well as the advent of ‘smart TVs’ offering access to a limitless world of musical and visual entertainment courtesy of a broadband internet connection. Top-of-the-range home theatre systems from most reputable companies now offer a ‘near cinematic’ experience when it comes to the audio, with a series of four (often wireless) speakers carefully positioned around the room producing that much sought-after ‘surround sound’ effect. With the addition of ‘vertical firing speakers’ – directing audio upwards to fill the room with rich sound (creating what some manufacturer’s call the ‘third dimension’) – coupled with ‘sound calibration technology’ (to make sound even more immersive and lifelike), it’s difficult not to be impressed with how far we’ve come. For those who want an enhanced audioTV experience without the expense of a full theatre system, a ‘soundbar’ might be a good option. Better than relying solely on the built-in television speakers, yet unobtrusive, the ‘soundbar’ contains a series of additional speakers and simply sits at the base of your TV screen to enhance the sound.
Looking good So, you’re wired for sound, now the visual choices are even more impressive. All modern flat-screen televisions put their cathode-ray ancestors to shame in terms of clarity and design. Gone are the bulky consoles of yesteryear, replaced
with sleek, space-saving screens that can be wall-mounted or free-standing. Ultra high-definition screens ensure breathtaking detail and are available in both LED/LCD and plasma formats. And if size is everything, then modern TVs are in a league of their own with some having screens up to 79 inches (that’s 2m!). For those wanting that little bit extra, some manufacturers produce large screens with a gentle curve (much like an old cinema screen), which claims to produce even more of a ‘wrap-around’ effect visually. Added to this mix are the exciting options for viewing 3D movies, specifically those such as Avatar, shot in 3D for cinematic release. Though watching these films still requires each viewer to wear a pair of lightweight, battery-operated glasses, it’s a far cry from the red/green glasses of old. Successful 3D technology has been around for a number of years now, but many of the newer 3D televisions also have the inbuilt ability to convert 2D programmes and films into 3D as well as upscaling lowerresolution video content into ultra high definition.

Smart cookieS Smart televisions bridge the gap between your computer and traditional homeentertainment systems, providing access to limitless online content and subscription-based film and television programme providers such as Netflix. They also enable a very handy means of online (free) communication via Skype as well as access to online games and other apps.
Where to from here? The myriad of home-entertainment products available on the market means the current consumer is spoilt for choice, but it certainly pays to shop around and seek advice before committing to one particular system. Ensure the television screen is the right size for the room (the biggest may not necessarily be the most comfortable to watch) and make sure the technology you choose fulfils the needs of everyone in the family.

Sustainable furnishings – become part of the solution Rebecca Lees highlights ways to be eco-savvy with furnishing choices built to last. Our homes are our havens. We like them to be stylish, comfortable and safe. However, safety can be a challenge these days with many new furnishings – from carpet to cushions and couches – being manufactured using toxic substances. The release of these substances into our homes not only endangers our health, but the wider environment, affecting others, too. Choose renewable, natural materials Trees act as huge lungs for our planet, absorbing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen. As well as cleaning our air, they keep the planet cool, stabilise soil, and provide a habitat for all manner of creatures. If sustainably managed, trees provide us with an everlasting supply of carbon-neutral building materials, which naturally decompose when we’re done with them. 2. CalCulate the blind diMensions First, establish the head rail allowance. Head rail allowance = batten face + batten top + 3.5cm. Subtract head rail allowance from finished blind length to give amount of fabric to be folded. Decide on the approximate depth you would like the folds to be when the blind is pulled up (usually between 10cm and 25cm). Divide length of fabric to be folded by an odd number until you get an answer closest to your ideal fold depth. The odd number is now the number of pleat sections.

1. Measure the window Decide if you want the blind to hang inside or outside the recess of the window. For inside the recess: Measure the drop from the top of the recess to the windowsill. This will give you the finished blind length. Measure the width of the window recess at three different heights and use the shortest width as your measurement. This will give you the finished blind width. For outside the recess: Decide where the batten that will support the blind will be fixed above the window. Mark the position of the top of the batten and measure down to the sill. This will give you the finished blind length. Measure the window at its widest point. If there is no architrave, add 12cm to give the finished blind an overlap of 6cm each side. This will give you the finished blind width.

DIY points along the width of the fabric. Cut along this line, ensuring you are left with a square rectangle. Use this same process to cut the finished blind width. (If using multiple widths of fabric, repeat process and sew panels together so the rectangle ends up being the previously established fabric cut width. Remember to account for a 1.5cm seam allowance in these calculations.) 5. Make “rod poCkets” Turn blind face down. From the bottom, measure up 9cm and draw a line (this is your hem allowance). From this line, measure up the established fold depth. Draw a straight line at right angles to the side of the blind. Measure another line 1cm further up from the first and draw another horizontal line. Pinch fabric (right sides together) so these two lines come together. Pin along the seam and sew. Repeat process, measuring from the hemline every time so as not to compound errors. 6. sew sides and heM Turn in fabric 5cm on each side. Sew and press with iron. From the bottom, measure up each side and mark two horizontal lines, one at 4cm and one at 9cm. Fold up along the 4cm, then the 9cm line. Sew along the edge of the fold. Press. 7. attaCh rings With blind face down, mark positions on the sewn “rod pockets” to attach the rings. Rings should be 10cm from the sides and then spaced evenly across at 30-40cm intervals. Hand-sew on rings.

Cover the ends in extra fabric. 9. attaCh head rail Measure from the hem up to the finished blind length. At this point, draw a line across the back of the blind. Position the head rail’s bottom edge on this line. Wrap fabric above the line around the head rail and staple along the top. 10. attaCh eye-hooks Mark and pre-drill points for eye-hooks in line with the rings on the underside of the head rail. Add one extra eye-hook, which will guide the pull cord, at the far end of the head rail. 11. attaCh pull Cord Starting at the farthest line of rings from the pulley end, tie cord to the bottom ring and thread up through the rings at each “rod pocket”, followed by the eye-hooks. Cut cord about 90cm down from the final eye-hook. Start again at the next line of rings, repeating process until blind is completely threaded. Tie a knot just after the final eye-hook. Thread all cords through the cord toggle and knot.

When we’re decorating our home, paint colour and window-treatment choices might come more easily than decisions on lighting. These days there’s a huge range of choice. It’s not always intuitive, so we can’t picture the end result in our minds, yet it’s an important, and often expensive, part of the renovation. There’s been a lot of technical development in the field, and there’s a lot of jargon and technical language, but let’s leave that for now – the way eyes work hasn’t changed and what we do in our homes is the same, so lighting requirements remain constant. In general, these fall into three categories: • General lighting: the basic background lighting we require to live comfortably
and move safely around the house. For most of us this resides on the ceiling. • Task lighting: essential for any job involving close work. If you’re a reader, try a standard lamp behind your favourite chair; if you’re an in-bed reader make sure the bedside lamp will be up to the task. If you’re not planning wall or under-cupboard lighting in your kitchen, position lighting near walls above work surfaces. Lights in the centre of the ceiling will cause the cook to cast their own shadow over the work area – not ideal. • Decorative lighting: how you can add interest, highlight art or special features, and make your house feel more homely.
industrial look, the highly decorative chandelier has been downsized to a mini, to fit modern-sized houses. • Uplights: direct light up to the ceiling, which is reflected back into the room. They can be suspended from the ceiling, mounted on walls, be freestanding or table lamps mounted into the floor. • Wallwashers: similar to uplights, they reflect light off the wall and are either ceiling or wall mounted. • Spotlights: specialised lights that emphasise a particular space or object. There are too many different varieties to list here! • Cupboard and drawer lighting: wired to turn on upon opening. While lighting for shelving and display cabinets has been common for years, cupboard and drawer lighting options are trending now. For ambience, other specialised lighting may just produce a warm soft glow – for example, a paper lampshade – or they can be decorative in themselves, such as those fantastic art nouveau or art deco lamps. There are a couple of final considerations that will affect your choices. The first is whether the level of light matches your requirements. If you’re not getting a lighting specialist in, take your lighting plan when selecting your lights to get some advice on whether your choices will be suitable. The other is the light source. The old incandescent bulb produced a warm yellow light, while fluorescent and halogen lights have a whiter light we perceive as harsher, but it is a better option if your hobby involves close work – sewing, drawing or painting. There are many factors to take into consideration when choosing the best lighting options for your home, but getting it right will make all the difference.
Think spotlights, table lamps, and coloured lighting. In the same way you use a mood board, a lighting plan is a great place to start your lighting renovation. To help check if your planned positioning is right, get someone to hold a portable workman’s light there and stand back to see the result. It’s harder to picture your lighting in 3D, but bear in mind that ceiling and high-mounted wall lights provide better general lighting, table lamps are more restful, and low- and floormounted lights are best for highlighting features. Also use your plan to decide where you need your light switches. You don’t need to have all your lights in a room working on the same circuit, you can group lights to different switches to achieve different moods and change lighting levels. While we’re on the subject of switches, consider whether you want them to add decorative effect, as there is a wide variety from which to choose. There is also a bewildering selection of light fittings. Roughly grouped: • Downlights: can be recessed or semirecessed and some have adjustable eyeball fittings. They can also be flushmounted on the ceiling (some double as efficient flycatchers), or in the form of pendants. While recessed lighting has been the most common fitting for many years, pendants have been trending, particularly industrial styles. They direct light down and a group will provide efficient general lighting. Use a row over a table or worktop, or a single light for local lighting that won’t illuminate the whole room. • Chandeliers: the king of decorative lighting. Try this combination of awesome immune boosters to get your soup started: • Sauté a few cloves of chopped garlic, 1 chopped onion, and 1 Tbsp chopped ginger in coconut oil for 5-10 minutes. • Dice a couple of large potatoes and cover with 800ml vegetable stock or water, simmering until potatoes are tender. Rock your way to the top Linda Moser climbs the walls for fun – and gets a workout to boot. One thing I discovered at Clip ‘N Climb is that you don’t have to be Bear Grylls to have a blast. I wore trackpants, a T-shirt and running shoes; no survival gear required. A harness was provided and helpful, friendly staff presented a safety/orientation session before I was released into the multi-coloured and brightly lit wild world of Clip ‘N Climb at the YMCA Adventure Centre. It felt a bit like being inside a giant game and everything suddenly looked big, new and exciting, kind of like experiencing childhood again. Where to begin was the most pressing question and I was only slightly concerned about making an utter fool of myself as I navigated my way up, up, up, using strategically placed hand and foot holds, to the top of my very first wall. The hardest part, at first anyway, was letting go after reaching the top and allowing the rope and harness system to do its job. Once I had mastered that there was no stopping me – look out children, there’s a real climber coming through! I timed and raced my way up three walls that got progressively more and more difficult, locked myself in semi-
darkness for a vertical closet climb, bravely stepped my way up a spiral of flat-topped wooden logs and got most of the way up a simulated rock face. Admittedly, it was probably something Bear could do in his sleep. I passed on ‘The Leap of Faith’, which required jumping from a great height to a hanging trapeze, as it was generating far too much attention from overeager onlookers placing personal bets on the sidelines. After all the excitement I treated myself to a chai latte and a slice in The Wall Café, overlooking other happy Clip ‘N Climbers, before heading home. Today, as I sit and write of my experience, I can feel the muscles in my back, my chest, and my arms. These muscles are acutely aware of a real workout, but all I seem to remember is an absolutely fantastic time. Forget the gym! If Clip ‘N Climb can produce that much fun, and exercise to boot, I’ll be back. For more serious climbers, including all the Bears out there, the YMCA Adventure Centre offers an additional range of climbing terrains and courses that are sure to take your climbing ability to new heights.
